Artist Statement

My work is best expressed as realism and abstraction in the same painting,  in which I create paintings by representation and story telling, but often with the addition of geometric shapes or expressionism within the same painting. Interestingly, a realistic painting can start out with a somewhat "modern" feel with simplified shapes that are later developed and more refined. Often, an artist will allow the background to retain the original loose brushwork for a fresh feel, and have been doing that for a long time.

Realism is about painting what is seen but can involve so much more!  Painting realistically  with the addition of abstraction  allows me to explore two genre within the same painting to create an unexpected beauty.  In this way, I am hoping that this process  communicates imaginative ideas not only within the constraints of traditional methodology, but by going beyond: surface pattern, a bit of surrealism, geometric shapes, or bold expressive brushstrokes. Yet, happily, traditional painting has been the foundation of my early training.

The result can be a painting within the painting, or a background that seems to have nothing to do with the original subject. Nonetheless, each segment of a work is integrated with these contradictory elements to make a cohesive, unified image.

Enthusiasm for art and growing up with supportive parents who encouraged a love and study of  drawing, pastel and oil painting with talented instructors was part of my early experience.  Later, I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and studied with a focus on painting and design, worked in the design field, and created  graphics  for children's clothing and sleepwear. As  a staff  member with the Bergen Museum of Art and Science, New Jersey, I was involved in hanging and preparing art receptions, and being exposed to many different artist's works, from around the world.  Later on, I studied with the Art Students League of New York City.

While  raising two children with my wonderful husband, I painted, exhibited  and sold  work regularly at art competitions, exhibits, and won awards along the way.

As a former instructor at the Spring Street Art Center and Art New Jersey,  I presently enjoy the opportunity to show my work and interact with the community.
